Stretch mark treatment is a series of treatments carried out to heal cracks caused by various factors such as childbirth, rapid weight gain, and some diseases. Thanks to these treatments, it is possible to obtain even and smooth skin and a more aesthetic appearance.

What is Stretch Mark Treatment?

Stretch mark treatment methods consist of several and different techniques. Stretch marks defined as “strea” in medical literature. It may be caused by rapid weight gain, obesity, Cushing’s syndrome, pregnancy, or changes in hormonal activities in our body. In general, stretch marks occur in the dermis, which is the middle layer of the skin, due to stretching, with the wear of the fibers called collagen and elastin and as a result of the damage in the lower layers of the skin. In short, they are small tears in the skin, which occur in the dermis layer that cannot withstand the excessive tension pressure of the skin. Stretch mark treatment methods are used to eliminate the problems caused by the wear of the protective collagen and elastin fibers that give the skin elasticity.

Stretch marks, long and spiral lines in the dermis layer of the skin, can be removed by using materials and technologies such as needles, lasers, and solutions. Non-surgical treatments constitute the majority of the methods. If the stretch marks are formed in 5 to 6 months, then the treatment success is usually the highest, when they are reddish and purple., Early treatment can result in permanent and satisfactory results

How to Treat Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks treatment methods are simple practices such as chemical peels, mesotherapy, dermaroller, applications containing hyaluronic acid or retinoic acid, vitamin solutions. If these procedures are not enough, advanced treatment methods are recommended.

Here are the advanced treatment methods for stretch marks: PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), Biodermogenesis, Carboxytherapy, microneedle radiofrequency, fractional Laser are the most preferred methods.

PRP: In PRP, some amount of blood taken from the body of the person and is taken into a tube, and then separated into its components in a rotating machine named centrifuge. After the plasma is taken from the blood, PRP is injected into the patient. This method is risk-free and generally safe as it uses the patient’s blood.

Laser Treatment: Laser treatment is a non-surgical stretch mark treatment and is performed every 3 to 4 weeks. The ideal number of sessions depends on the size and general condition of the stretch marks. Usually, you will need a minimum of 5 sessions. Considering how severe they are, several sessions can be repeated. In fractional laser application stretch marks are removed and collagen production is stimulated via radiofrequency waves. The increased collagen leads to the regeneration of the damaged tissues. 

Carboxytherapy: Carboxytherapy, another method used in the treatment of stretch marks, aims to accelerate the body’s reaction and oxygen transport to the areas with stretch marks. This method helps renewal of the skin and a positive effect is observed in the small blood vessels as they function well and new ones may form. Carboxytherapy treatment is also used to eliminate cellulite, saggy skin, wounds, and weight problems.

Microneedle Radiofrequency: Microneedle radiofrequency can also be used to support the treatment of stretch marks. This method works by the radiofrequency device reaching under the skin and tightening it using small needles. This method needs to be repeated every few weeks and 3 to 4 times in total to get the full effects. 

Biodermogenesis: This method aims to increase the blood circulation and oxygen to the skin, which has regulating effects to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Which Areas to Apply Stretch Mark Treatment?

Medical stretch mark treatment methods can be applied on hands, chin, thighs, abdomen, chest, cheeks, legs, butt, inner legs, and arms. The method of choice depends on the application area and the severity of the problem. For example, stretch mark treatments for the jaw and abdomen may need different types or number of sessions.

Stretch Mark Treatment Before and After

Stretch mark treatments may cause redness, sensitivity and mild edema in the application areas. All these side effects can last for a few days. Mild scabs can also occur, which usually go away in a maximum of 14 days.

You should avoid the laser treatment for stretch marks in summer. Scabs will be negatively affected by sunlight. Besides, the side effects such as spots and redness may increase significantly in summer. Simple procedures will cause no side effects except slight redness.
